Sometimes a video is not at all about what you see... it's about what you hear. Today, I wrestled with my camera trying to find a dry spot to stand and focus on the nest, but to no avail. About that time, I heard Rufous calling to Roxie "kek-kek-kek" from one of their rendezvous trees across the street. As she made a bee-line to him, I moved the camera to see if I could capture some action. The result? I never got the camera into focus, but about half-way into the video, you can hear Roxie's "whanh whanh whanh" call. It's the female-only equivalent of "Okay, Big Boy, what did you bring me this time?" Watch carefully and you can see Rufous depart after a successful prey handoff.

It has finally stopped raining. That doesn't mean we are dry, but it does mean we have hopes of being dry once again one day.
In the meantime, things are busy at the Cooper's hawk nest. Here is Roxie feeding her hungry brood. Listen very carefully and you can hear the greedy nestlings "cheep cheep" for Mama to feed them.

It's summertime, and a good time for little hawks to wake up, stretch their wings, and play in the sunshine. I wish I could see down into the nest!
Listen for a phoebe calling in this video. She perches in the tippy top of one of the cypress trees and screeches away, confident she's too small to interest the Cooper's hawks.
